Comprehensive Guide to Wedding Rings / Engagement Rings
Comprehensive Guide to Wedding Rings / Engagement Rings
Wedding rings are items that the stay with you (physically) after the wedding. It's a reminder that you are married. It is at least for me. I feel proud seeing the ring on my finger. Although this article is targeted for "my brides" on wedding rings, the information here is sufficient for engagement rings as well.
Being a wedding photographer, getting photos of the wedding rings is part of the must-take photos for all weddings. Making the rings look good is an art that I love creating. I have a dedicated marco L lens just to photograph the rings. This allows me to capture all the details. Before choosing your wedding rings and setting aside a budget for the ring, here's a few pointers before you shop for the rings.
Which Metal - Rings come in different metals. The most common metals are yellow gold and white gold. In some countries, platinum rings are gaining it's popularity as an alternative form of modern silver. Platinum is the least reactive metal however it is the most expensive. Gold on the other hand retain it's resale value (not that you are planning to sell).
Which Stone - If you decide to havesome stones on your ring, diamonds, sapphires, man-made cubic zirconia are some stones that are commonly used. The most exotic stones are the pink diamonds. The most popular stone used in wedding rings will be the Diamonds. If you decide to get a diamond, make sure you understand the 5 Cs (Carat, Cut, Clarity, Colour, Certificate).
Which Design - For brides, you might want to consider getting a wedding ring that compliment your engagement ring. Often, the wedding band of the groom is thick. In the wedding bands section, jewellers like to have near identical wedding rings design with 2 different ring sizes.
Which Shop - Shop around for the design/stone that you like, taking into account of budget of course. Some people may tend to shop in the local jewellery shop(for ready made designs), while others like to get their rings directly from the jewellers (for custom made designs). Some may even go to the extend of getting their rings from overseas.
Preparing the rings for photographers - Lots of retailers in Adelaide are able to wash/clean your rings. You might want to consider cleaning your engagement rings before your wedding. (Sidetrack: my macro lens is sharp enough to capture the dust particles on your rings.)

Comprehensive Guide to Wedding Dresses
Comprehensive Guide to Wedding Dresses | Scott Goh Photography
Wedding Dresses are what I believe to be the most important factor for brides in their wedding. It is every bride's dream of wearing their perfect wedding dress just like the fairy-tale Cinderella since young. Hence, it is my task as the wedding photographer to capture the moments of the wedding dress. Getting the details of the dress and making it GLOW!
PS: Not many photographers do this in South Australia and I know that I am the first few to have this in my checklist.
People hire or purchase wedding dresses and the price ranges from a few hundreds to thousands of dollars. They range from custom made to high-end branded designer made.
Asian weddings always have their traditional wedding dresses which can be seen in the local vietnamese and chinese communities. Asian weddings can be slightly different where the bride will change into a few different wedding dresses during the reception.
I would like to list a few major brands and suppliers of wedding dresses in South Australia. I have heard of brides buying their dresses off ebay. I am also aware that there is a huge second-hand market for those branded expensive wedding dresses.

Professional Lenses for Wedding Photography
Professional Lenses for Wedding Photography
I always have been asked about the lenses for wedding photography. I understand that as any amateur or budget-tight photographer who wants to venture into the wedding industry wants to start their business with the best equipment yet the least amount of capital investment.
In Scott Goh Photography, we believe that quality lenses produces quality images. Any bad quality images can never be turned into a good images. As a Canon user, I highly recommend quality "L" lenses. Nikon or other brands do have equivelant high-end lenses.
Now, back to the question. What lenses for wedding photography? Click here for a list of equipment that I use for my wedding photography.
PS: There is no right and wrong in the lens that you use. It's all about preferences.
1. Knowing Your Style
Are you a prime (fixed focal length) or a zoom person? If you are a person who refer zoom lenses and dislike changing of lenses, the canon 16-35LII, 24-70LII and the 70-200LII will suits you.
If you are a prime person, you have a whole series of prime L lenses option ranging from 17L, 24LII, 35L, 50L, 85LII, 100L, 135L, 200L...
2. Knowing Where you are taking (Space)
Often, amature photographer are unaware that space somehow determine the focal length that you will use. For example, in a bedroom, be expect to be using at least 24mm on full frame camera. 35, 50 and up to 70mm might be the farthest I go in bedroom. In an open field, I use up to 200mm. If you are using a crop-body camera, multiple the focal lenght by 1.6 or 1.3 depend on the camera you have. In short, you need differnt focal length at different part of the wedding. I can't stress enough on this idea of space and focal length relationship.
3. Knowing What you are taking (Object/People)
Knowing what you are taking can determine the lenses that you (may) have to use. Simple, I use a delicated Macro lens 100L for my ring shots and some other detail shots. Focal length of 35 and above tend to have the least distorting. Hence, 85L, 70-200LII and 135L suit portrait photography.
To shop for your new lens, you can shop online via Canon website.
Lastly, if you are keen about starting your wedding photography. Please make sure that you satisfy the requirements mentioned here. You will need backup, insurances, ABN etc..
Hope you enjoy this article.
